In a world full of binary choices what we come to discover is corporate choices are more of an illusion than a reality. What we’re programmed to see as competitors are actually owned and controlled by larger asset managers which are incentivized to collaborate more than compete. Although Black Rock and Vanguard don’t own all the shares of most of our favorite corporations, a little research reveals their combined positions add up to significant percentages of corporations we often think of as competitors. So if a handful of corporations influence all the other ones the question must be asked, “do we really have choices or do we really have one choice with different labels?”
